Oplysning fra vores kammerater i Libanon

maj 24, 2007

Dear Comrades,
As I write to you, Lebanon is witnessing a series of security events directed against the Lebanese Army and the whole of Lebanon. These tragic events are yet another in a series of events masterminded by factions supportive of the Syrian Ba`athist regime, in a continuing attempt to foil the realization of the International tribunal on the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minster Rafik al-Hariri.
On Sunday 20 May, a shady Palestinian paramilitary organization calling itself Fateh al-Islam assaulted and ambushed Lebanese army checkpoints and patrols north of Lebanon and in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr Al-Bared north of Tripoli. This was followed by a series of ongoing clashes between the army and this outlaw group in various part of the city of Tripoli and has so far resulted in the arrest and killing of a number of these militants and the capture of all their command posts outside the camp, and the tragic death of 27 Lebanese soldiers. This same group was also linked to 13th of February Ain `Alak bus bombings, injuring and killing a number of innocent Lebanese citizens.
These attempts to spread chaos, however, are not only restricted to one region of the country. Late last night a car bomb exploded in the highly populated Eastern sector of Beirut, spreading terror and trying to destroy Lebanon’s economic infrastructure.
The recent events fall in line with Syrian president Bashar al Assad’s threats to inflame Lebanon if the international tribunal is approved.
In this certain juncture, we stand firm that the only salvation for Lebanon and its people is reaffirming:
A strong support of the Lebanese government in its continuous effort to strengthen the Lebanese Security forces, the only legitimate side to bear arms over Lebanese soil as endorsed in UN Security Council resolution 1701. The vital ratification of the International Tribunal by the Security Council under chapter seven as being the only measure to achieve justice and protect the Lebanese from the gale of assassinations and instability. The monitoring of the Lebanese-Syrian borders by the United Nations to prevent the influx of arms and terrorists to Lebanon.
The implementation of all UN resolutions on Lebanon (1559,1595,1636,1644,1680,1701) We are fully aware of your continuous support of Lebanese sovereignty and independence and we are confident that you will spare no effort to support our quest to safeguard a free democratic Lebanon.
Sincerely YoursWalid JOUMBLATT
